Flint Michigan Events
Work to repair the city's drinking water system and supply residents is continuing, authorities said. Flint, Michigan, the city's nearly 1,000-year-old water supply is ending and being replaced by a court-approved policy agreement, marking an important step toward overcoming the state's decision to remove water from the Flint River rather than treat it to prevent lead contamination.
Congress passed a sweeping law authorizing water projects across the country, including $170 million to eliminate lead in Flint's drinking water. The Michigan Legislature and Snyder approved $6 million in emergency aid for Flint, which includes $5 million for water treatment, $3 million for water filters and $2.5 million for the city's water supply, as well as $4.6 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help Flint relocate its drinking water to Detroit, according to a news release.

Snyder declared a state of emergency the same day federal officials confirmed they were investigating, and the Michigan National Guard began helping distribute bottled water and filters after Snyder asked the federal government for help. The White House has allocated $1.5 million in federal funds for the state's emergency response to the crisis. Snyder's former chief of staff, Rick Snyder, has since been charged with obstruction of justice and lying to investigators.
The most serious charge is against former Flint water authority chief Michael Ambrose, who was charged Wednesday with involuntary manslaughter. He was also charged with conspiracy to commit false facts and failure to pay guarantees for part of a water project that led to the crisis. Schuette accused Ambrose of criminally neglecting his duty by protecting Flint residents from health risks from contaminated drinking water.
